Early Bird Catches the Worm

I’ve never been a morning person. For the last decade I have repeatedly tried to change this. Time and time, and time again, I have failed. If anything, I have gotten worse and struggle to wake up before 7 or 8 am on a good day. Over the last three weeks however, I have been forced to change this.

When it comes to booking flights, I religiously book flights in the afternoon for short haul and as late at night as possible for medium or long-haul. In the past three weeks, due to circumstances around time and price, I have had no less than six flights departing from as early as 6.40 am to 8.40 am. I’ve had to wake up at about 4 to 5 am for each one of these flights.

Leading up to this busy travel period, I dreaded the idea of waking up at 4 am and was just praying that I can get through this period unscathed. Sitting on the last of these flights, an early flight from Belfast to London, I notice the beautiful sunrise as we climb out of Belfast and realise that it is quite nice to be up and at it so early. There’s something special, perhaps magical about the early hours and the promise of a full day ahead.

Has this changed my perspective on early morning flights? Yes.

Will I be able to finally wake up early on a consistent basis? Only time will tell.
